Writing on sticky notes and page flags is such a great idea!! I haven’t got a physical copy book (yet!) mainly because it takes up quite a lot of space and I’m love annotating on the e-version, it may sound silly but there aren’t enough colour options for highlighting. And sometimes I just don’t feel like writing things on a physical book! Definitely gonna try these tricks once I got a physical copy!!
I'm so glad you found some helpful tips here! And your point about not enough color options with your ebooks doesn't sound silly at all - I think those discoveries that enhance our reading experience are all worthwhile!
found this just in time plan to start annotate! do u prefer to read first the book and then re-read and annotating it or just read it once and directly annotate it?
I'm glad this found you at just the right time! Personally, I annotate my first time through, and I nearly always find additional points to annotate upon any rereads. I do typically start with a library copy whenever possible; if I realize I'm wanting to tab a bunch or can tell it's a book I'll refer back to often, I may then purchase a copy for myself.
I love the idea of annotating books but I rarely read sitting at a desk. Do you hold the book in your lap? My writing is atrocious if I don’t have a solid surface.
I hadn't even thought of this detail, Katherine, but I actually use a lap desk quite often! It's handy in a recliner, on the couch, etc and provides a portable hard surface. I've even tossed it in the car sometimes when I'm traveling and staying at a hotel. Like transparent sticky notes, discovering the lap desk was truly another game-changer!
That's a great question, Carmily! I mostly read via paper and audio so I personally don't have many ebook-specific suggestions - but if you look at the comments in 'part one' of this article series, some people have shared ebook ideas there. That might be a helpful start! (And if anyone is reading this comment and wants to leave ideas here too, please feel free!) :-)
Transparent sticky notes need to be a part of my life! And I use my bookmarks the same way to hold my flags. Thanks for sharing this peek into your reading life!
I love these tips! Circling a key concept or defining word or phrase - brilliant! I still prefer notes in the margins if I own the book because the transparent sticky note with my writing covering part of the book text bugs me. Hello, my OCD has entered the chat.
Fantastic - I'm so glad some of these tips struck a chord for you, Jenna! And I totally understand what you're saying about not wanting to cover the text with more text; if I own the book, I typically choose writing in the margins as well. It's so great hearing all the different ideas and perspectives - thank you for sharing yours!
Transparent sticky notes is a great idea for library books! I love the library and have been using it more this year but I find myself lost when it comes to annotating books from the library. I love to see everyone's methods for writing in books
That's awesome that you're using your library more and more, Ryan! And I agree, the transparent sticky notes come in handy with borrowed books - it's quick and doesn't take me out of the book as much as pausing to record something in a notebook or in my notes app would. I was very excited when I realized transparent sticky notes existed!
I agree on the transparent sticky notes. They are a game-changer! My sister-in-law gave me my first pack when I started grad school (she found them when working on her doctorate) and they are the BEST. She also gave me the best non-smear permanent marker to use with them (which I don't have on me at the moment and I don't remember the brand), but they've literally made annotating so much better. Some great tips here!
Isn't it such a thrill to find a tool that makes your project easier, lighter, or just somehow better?! I'm happy you share the enthusiasm for transparent sticky notes. I love the non-smear marker idea too - I bet that helps your annotations stand out a bit more. If you think of the brand, please feel free to share!

Do you have any tips or resources for those of us who read e-books?

My pleasure, Heather! I hope the transparent sticky notes bring you and your reading life as much delight as they have brought me! :-)

It’s a Falaike dual-tip permanent marker numbered 6824. They work so well with the transparent stickies!
I've never heard of these and will be checking them out ASAP. Thank you for the tip, Laura!
